Goldtail (Allocnema leucosticta)

The Goldtail damsel, Allocnemis leucosticta, is endemic to the south and east of South Africa. It was quite common  in our garden.
The usually white pterostigma are characteristic and make it look rather like a helicopter when in flight.
The male has the golden tail, the female blue. I think that the teneral males have a pale blue tail and that elderly females have a golden mottling to theirs. Also the pterostgma varies in colour from pale blue to a deep gold; this may be age dependent.

Below a close up of a male. It has black secondary genitalia under the 2nd abdominal segment.

Next a female:

Next are the tail ends, on the left is the male (yellow), on the right female (blue.)

Finally below is an elderly female with, what is usually the preserve of the male, golden tail and pterostigma.
